Sheppard, Hugh Richard Lawrie [Dick]
(1880–1937)
   Devotional Writer and Broadcaster.
   Sheppard was educated at the University of Cambridge and was ordained into the Anglican ministry in 1907. He became well known as the Vicar of St Martin in the Fields, London. He was quick to realise the possiblilities of broadcasting as a means of propagating the Gospel and he was the author of The Human Parson and The Impatience of a Parson, both of which achieved large sales. He was a determined promoter of ecclesiastical reform and a convinced pacifist. In 1929 he was appointed Dean of Canterbury Cathedral, but ill-health prompted his resignation.
